Crafting and Materials

Every item has a fate: equip it, store it, sell it, salvage it into materials or combine it into something better. Crafting is where gold and the materials from your loot turn into power.

Who Handles
Brokkr iron: reforging, polishing, masterwork, tempering and salvaging
Andvari treasure: sockets, socketing and combining gems
Völva magic: the Codex of Power, runewords and combining runes
Mímir the Cauldron: transforming items and trading materials
Material Comes from Used for
Fragments Common and Magic items reforging, polishing and masterwork on low-tier items, the first socket
Essence Rare and Epic items crafting on Epic and Legendary items, high masterwork levels, sockets
Freyja’s Tear Legendaries, Sets and Ancestrals imprinting Aspects, masterwork +8 to +10, set pieces
Stardust each ★ affix salvaged attempting to create a ★ in the Cauldron

Gold comes in from loot and sales, and goes out on crafting, Vault tabs, the Merchant’s stock and respeccing the tree.

With Brokkr, or in bulk through the loot filter and the inventory’s Salvage Marked button. Commons and Magics yield Fragments; Rares, Fragments and Essence; Epics, Essences; Legendaries and Sets, Essences and Freyja’s Tears (or you can extract the Aspect into the Völva’s Codex). Higher-iLvl items yield more; the table by rarity and iLvl is in the Crafting catalog.

  • Each ★ affix yields 1 extra Stardust.
  • Loose gems and runes go back to your bag; the runes of a runeword are lost.
  • Masterwork returns 50% of the materials spent on it.
  • Favorite items (padlock) are never salvaged or sold in bulk.

The gold cost of every service grows with the item’s level and rarity. As a reference, the first reforge of a Rare item at iLvl 10 costs around 270 gold beta. The panel’s preview always shows the cost before you confirm, and every price by rarity and iLvl is in the Crafting catalog.
