Beginner tips

Speak with Odin on his throne and he’ll share a different piece of advice each time:

  • Heimdall guards the Bifröst: talk to him to set out on an expedition.
  • Brokkr reforges one affix at a time: whichever affix he reforges becomes the anvil affix, and each reforge costs more.
  • Brokkr’s masterwork goes up to +10. At +4, +8 and +10 an affix gains +25%.
  • Salvage what you don’t use with Brokkr: Fragments, Essences and Freyja’s Tears pay for your crafting.
  • Mark as favorite anything that must never be salvaged or sold in bulk.
  • The Völva keeps the power of legendaries in her Codex and imprints it onto Rare and Epic items.
  • The right runes, in the right order, on a Rare item: the Völva awakens a runeword.
  • Andvari opens sockets and sets gems and runes. Removing a gem with him costs nothing.
  • Three identical gems become a better one in Andvari’s hands.
  • A cauldron boils at Mímir’s well: three items of the same rarity climb one step.
  • Mímir remembers every enemy slain, every expedition and every runeword revealed.
  • The Merchant restocks every time you return from an expedition.
  • Keep what you want to hold on to in the Vault: your bag has only 30 slots.
  • The Valkyrie tends your talent tree. Test your powers on the dummies in the training grounds.
  • Movement speed matters. In an idle game, crossing the region faster means progressing faster. Boots with movement speed are worth their weight in gold.
  • Read the affix range. The item tooltip shows the value and the tier range, like +12% damage [10–14]. A value near the maximum is a good masterwork candidate; one near the minimum can be polished.
  • Respec early. Up to level 20, resetting your tree with the Valkyrie is free. Try all three branches.
  • Pick your branch by your weapon. Points in any branch always count, but a branch’s skills and keystones only work with that branch’s weapon style.
  • Use the loot filter. Automatically salvaging Common and Magic items saves trips and yields materials.
  • Exploit weaknesses. Most draugr fear fire, wolves are weak to lightning and the Jarl resists physical damage. See the Bestiary.
  • Don’t rush to raise the difficulty. Each difficulty covers a level range. If your hero keeps falling, go back, improve your gear and try again.
